rejoin domain for virtual machine on hyper-v

sometimes , the new virtual machine from old physical machine may need to rejoin windows ad domain , here is how

on virtual machine , quit domain , reboot

on dc , open ad users and computers , find the new virtual machine , right click , reset computer account

on virtual machine , rejoin domain , reboot

uninstall unused driver from virtual machine on hyper-v

once physical to virtual conver is done , the next setp to do is install hyper-v integration services for windows system guest os , when complete , it's better to remove old physical driver from system

here is how

click start , all programs , accessories , command prompt , right click , run as administrator

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

start devmgmt.msc

view , show hidden devices

then uninstall all old driver for physical machine , reboot

a little note for windows server 2008 r2 hyper-v

Today , I found a little tool call disk2vhd http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx , with disk2vhd , physical machines are convert to vhd file for virtualization with hyper-v

but there is a little problem

my network setup was 4 physical nics are combined to 1 teamd virtual nic call team1 , then I create a external network connection with team1 and share this connection with host os , nic 6 will be add to system with this setup , then setup ip address and other settings for nic 6 like gateway ip address

when the guest os's gateway ip is different from host os's setting , guest os can't ping gateway , I don't know why , I just reconfigure my network setup for all guest os and host os to using the same gateway ip address , then remove nic 1 from team1 and setup nic 1 for host os connection only , then everything working well

setup windows server 2008 r2 enterprise for hyper v on dell pe r710

in the end of this year , I start to working to import our current physical server to hypver v , the so call virtualization

Hardware for this is Dell power edge r710 , which seems the best virtualization platform from dell , and with windows server 2008 r2 enterprise

why I like windows server 2008 r2 enterprise ? because , with 1 enterprise license , 4 free 2008 standard licenses are free for guest os , so for the cost issue , my company pick up windows server

the first thing to do is , make sure the intel vt function is enabled in bios setup , then install windows server 2008 r2 enterprise and add hyper v feature , this is an easy step , but vt function is disabled by dell's default , trouble shooting for this issue take me for 2 working days , so , please check this first

the second thing to do is , pick up which team mode for 4 onboard broadcom nics and how many virtual machine need to connect to the physical network , in my case , all my guest os need to connect to physical network , so , I just combine these 4 nics to 1 virtual nic , and select this virtual nic as external network for hypver v , this host server also need to connect to physical network , so host server and all guest os share the same virtual nic as well

the last ting to do is convert or install new virtual machine into hyper v

for team support , please download latest broadcom driver from dell web site , I don't know why dell's oem driver don't support team function
